The Fishing Report form Sea Adventures of  Kenya
Hello Everyone,

I must apologize for not sending any newsletters out for so long but there has been a lot going on here that needed clearing up first. The biggest change has been to do with Pemba Island where, very sadly we shall not be able to visit again in the foreseeable future. More on that later, but we shall instead be offering some very exciting safaris up to Lamu and Kiwayu in the far north. With the ever rising fuel prices we have regrettably had to revise our own fishing rates for this coming season and the new rates are shown at the end of this newsletter.

PEMBA ISLAND - We have learnt that the Japanese government through the World Bank have given the Zanzibar government US$72 million of which US$6 million are to be used to transform the entire west coast of Pemba Island in to a Marine Protected Area. This in itself might be a good thing but only time will tell if the authorities will indeed have the balls to tackle the very destructive fishing methods used by the local people. However, it is the new licence fees and taxes that are making the Pemba safaris completely uneconomic. In recent years we have always purchased licences from the Zanzibar government at US$500 per boat and paid all the taxes that we have been asked to pay. Now, they are asking for a licence fee of $3,000 per boat plus a hotel tax of 10% on accommodation and 15% on beverages and all activities plus all the normal fees for customs, port dues etc. Indications are that the dive operators are also being forced to call off Pemba so one is left wondering what indeed they are looking for.

NORTH KENYA SAFARIS - The area to the north of Malindi including the North Kenya Banks (NKB), Lamu and Kiwayu present a very exciting option for live aboard safaris. There is excellent and very varied fishing as well as beautiful anchorages to go in to for the night. The NKB is the most prolific water along the East African coast for billfish, tunas and sharks and there are great opportunities for all kinds of other game fish. The NKB and north to and beyond Kiwayu are still very much unspoilt and hence very rich offering the sports fishermen wonderful opportunities. We are able to pick guests up from any port on the Kenya coast but the number of days that you book will obviously dictate how far we are able to go.

SHIMONI FISHING - We shall of course continue to offer fishing charters out of Shimoni and although in early 2006 the best marlin fishing was further north on average over the the last 40 years the Pemba Channel has provided by far the better marlin fishing. "Broadbill" has still had the most marlin in the period since 1990 and since 2002 "Kamara II" has caught by far the most.

SEA MOUNTAIN - I have a booking for a sea mountain safari on Sunday 18 and Monday 19 February 2007 and we are looking for another interested party to take the second boat. The sea mountain is 55 nautical miles due east of Shimoni rising out of over 4,000-ft to 1,200-ft below the surface. The mountain is shaped a little like Mount Kilimanjaro and only about 1 mile across at the summit but it forms part of a ridge that is set perpendicular to the current. So long as there is a reasonable north flowing current it generates an upwelling bringing nutrients to the surface. In the past there has been some very good fishing there for billfish, including swordfish and tunas. It is also the only place on this coast where bigeye tunas have been caught although those were taken in September. We always require that we take a minimum of 2 boats for these safaris for safety reasons. The safari starts from Shimoni at 6.30am on day 1 and returns to Shimoni at around 4pm on day 2 fishing non-stop in between and the price is the same as for an "Extended Combo" (see below). Please let me know if you are interested in booking the second boat or indeed in arranging a separate safari.

MATTHEWS/DE VILLIERS TOURNAMENT
This tournament will be held in Malindi over the weekend of 17th/18th November 2006 and since Kamara II will already be going to Malindi for another charter on 20th she will be available without the need to pay any re-location fees. Please contact me if you are interested.

Please note that for charters of 5 days or less we may need to charge a re-location fee of one day's fishing as per the Shimoni fishing rates. This will only be the case if the pick up and drop off point is not Shimoni and we are unable to secure a back-to-back charter.

Perhaps it might be helpful to give you an indication of distances from Shimoni. Malindi is 96 nautical miles from Shimoni and we can reach there easily in a day. Lamu is about a further 80 nautical miles to the north of Malindi and Kiwayu 30 miles further north still. Distances will obviously be affected by current and weather conditions, current usually flowing north to south although later in the season may well be flowing south beyond Malindi. Prevailing winds are generally from south until end November and from north December to mid March.

We hope that some of you will be able to visit us during this season and perhaps even do one of the safaris up in to the north. But, even if you cannot please keep in touch as we do enjoy hearing from you.
